SANDRO MILLER: MALKOVICH, MALKOVICH, MALKOVICH: HOMAGE TO PHOTOGRAPHIC MASTERS

SANDRO MILLER: MALKOVICH, MALKOVICH, MALKOVICH: HOMAGE TO PHOTOGRAPHIC MASTERS

Even though I obviously knew about this body of work (it took over internet few months ago) someone actually had to point it out to me as a reference for my project. And that made me think. Why? Why so obviously much alike body of work that I knew of wan't on my mind or in my research for this project?

Sandro Miller, Yousuf Karsh / Ernest Hemingway (1957), 2014
From the Malkovich, Malkovich, Malkovich - Homage to photographic masters series

At first glance I'm prosing to do vert similar thing, male actor playing various different roles, based on famous (important? ideas behind the selection of images in Miller's work?) The are the clear but small differences, Miller's work is a collaboration, mine isn't Well not in a classical sense but it kinda is. An involuntary collaboration of artists and models in the "original" artworks and me? What I'm proposing is a kind of an 'action of working with someone to produce something' even if it is without their knowledge...
Secondly, Miller and Malkovich use photographs of male and female subjects and I propose only appropriate / restate images portraying  female subjects. Also the use of make up which I'm considering not using at all at this stage.
But all of those a small and not really that important to be honest. I think the major difference is in the theoretical background (?)/ ideological ideas for the work. I am not intending to pay homage to any of the photographers. Even though I'll be using their images and the appropriation will be obvious (that's the plan anyway) I don't see the work as a tribute to any of the artist. It is to explore different ideas and reflect on different politics.
